Louis Chaigne
La salle Louis Chaigne aménagée sur le site des anciennes halles de Talmont est un lieu bien connu et fréquenté à de nombreuses occasions pour des manifestations officielles, associatives… Mais se rappelle-t-on qui était Louis Chaigne ?
Né à Talmont en 1899, son œuvre littéraire est à la fois éclectique et immense. Après de brillantes études commencées à l'école du hasard à Saint-Hilaire de Talmont, puis au collège Saint-Louis de Gonzague à Nantes, puis au collège Saint-Joseph du Clion à Pornic, il envisage tout d'abord de se consacrer au notariat et travaille à l'étude Branger. Mais, il se tourne très rapidement vers les lettres, sa passion. Encouragé par deux vendéens illustres, Georges Clemenceau et Achille Mestre, éminent professeur de droit à Paris qui l'entraîne à la capitale, Louis Chaigne entre à la revue « Les Lettres » en 1924. Ses activités de critique et d'écrivain ont un grand retentissement et l'amènent à rencontrer de grands personnages, il entretiendra d'ailleurs une correspondance soutenue avec André Maurois et François Mauriac. Louis Chaigne est incontestablement un homme de lettres « touche à tout » qui a marqué son temps. Humaniste Chrétien, critique littéraire, portraitiste, poète, il a légué une œuvre notamment composée de soixante-douze ouvrages très différents dont son « guide touristique pour Talmont et ses environs » illustré par son ami le peintre Auguste Goichon, « la couronne d'Ariane » recueil de poèmes, « la Vendée » publiée en 1933 et sans cesse rééditée jusqu'en 1981, son livre « Rondes », pour n'en retenir que quelques exemples. Ecrivain, poète, critique, portraitiste, au crépuscule d'une vie si riche, Louis Chaigne déclarait peu avant sa disparition en 1973, « Non, je ne suis pas un homme de lettres »…

Some history : Talmont is rich in a very contrasting past,inhabited since the most remote times.In the Middle Ages it was a powerful area marked by its impressive bathed in the streams fortress.
The glorious hours of TALMONT occur around the year 1000,the age when the former County of HERBAUGES is delivered to WILLIAM THE GREAT,Duke of AQUITAINE who is going to take a direct interest in Talmont.
But the master builder of the impressive fortress the majestic ruins of which still dominate the city is WILLIAM THE BALD ,founder of the dynasty of the Princes of TALMOND.One of the emblematic overlords of the castle of Talmont is RICHARD THE LION ,King of England. In 1628, in the face of the Protestant threat,the fortress was deliberately dismantled by Henry de La Trémoille on the order of Cardinal Richelieu. The French Revolution transformed theses ruins into a quarry.
Over time,the ebb of the waters around the old castle were combined with the ebb of history :from the silted up estuary,only remained the swamps and « the harbour of La Guittière » .The village of Talmont was asleep,dreaming of its past reputation.
During the First Empire the city of Saint-Hilaire is detached from Talmont in order to become an autonomous entity.
Before 1974, the city of Talmont forms an urban core surrounded by its larger predominantly rural neighbour :the city of Saint-Hilaire- de -Talmont. With the 1974 merging, the county finds a historical dimension again and an homogeneity that encourages its development.With a territory coming close to 9200 hectares Talmont-Saint-Hilaire is one of the largest municipalities in Vendée, reaching the area of Paris strictly speaking.
From the 1970s the town will emerge and begin a steady development.
The results of the 2009 census,the latest official census made by INSEE (National Institute of Statistics and Information about the Economy) showed a population of 6693 inhabitants in Talmont-Saint-Hilaire .Moreover, with the tourist season time, the municipal population rises to about 30000 people.
Talmont-Saint-Hilaire combines HISTORY with its 12th castle ,NATURE with its oyster-producing zone,its great natural set composed of marshes,sand dunes,forest,beaches, and TOURISM with its deepwater marina offering 630 boat-places, its golf course which overlooks the deep blue sea, a renowned automobile museum, an aquarium called « the Seventh Continent »,all based on a diverse range of good quality accomodations .
